6th September 2006 Season One - Week 4

Sidesteps to Victory

The first season of the Kettering Dodgeball League was finished off in style by SideSteps. The final match of the season was all or nothing. SideSteps had to win the match to seal the league title. They secured the championship in style by overpowering under-strength Retail Assassins 7-0.

After winning the first game 5-0, SideSteps were pushed much harder in the second game, running out 2-0 winners. After blitzing the Assassins 5-0 again, the game of the night saw SideSteps seal the victory with a 1-0 win. With just seconds left on the clock, Daniel Cox (7 hits in the match) was 1-on-1 against Christina Pinnock (3 hits and 2 catches). Daniel had ball control, with 2 balls on his side of the court, to just one on Christina’s side. He made this count, taking out his opponent with a precision throw to Christina’s ankle and 9 seconds left to the end of the game.

Sidesteps reeled off the final 3 games to finish off the match. Their victory was down to a solid team performance, spearheaded by captain Rick Fraterrigo and Jamie Walden with 8 hits apiece and James Canavan with 4 catches and 4 hits.

16th August 2006 Season One - Week 3

Shaun - the Solo Assassin

This week saw only one non-league challenge match played. SideSteps took on a Hit and Run / Retail Assassins mixed squad. Star player was Shaun Gray who put in a star solo performance in one game. Outnumbered 6 to 1, but with 2 balls on his side of the court, Shaun singlehandedly out-gunned SideSteps to win the fifth game. The match ended in a 4-3 win for the combined squad, although SideSteps did take the edge on Game Points by 11-10.

9th August 2006 Season One – Week 2

Hitters Edge Out the Dodgers

First up were Hit and Run and Retail Assassins. This match saw the only 2 games to go the full 2 minutes on the night. An outstanding display of dodging, in the 5th game, by the Assassins’ Christina Pinnock, who also made 2 hits in the game, saw it finish 1-1. Simon Toseland was the lone survivor for Hit and Run. The other game that went all the way was due to Retail Assassin’s captain Nick Pinnock, 4 hits and 3 catches in the match, surviving for 35 seconds against 5 opponents. Hit and Run were too powerful for the Assassins as they ran out 6-0 winners, thanks to some excellent throwing from Dale Moore and Matt Smith with 8 hits each. Retail assassins Shaun Gray also made 8 hits in the match.

SideSteps then over-ran the unlucky Retail Assassins by 7-0. Both teams put in strong catching displays. The Steper’s James Canavan led the way by taking 6 catches and 6 hits, supported admirably by Rachel Oban who was on court to the final whistle, in all 7 games. Retail Assassins’ Owen Toseland made 3 catches and 3 hits but the Dodger’s tactical throwing and teamwork was just too much for their opponents.

The final match of the night was nip and tuck as Hit and Run and SideSteps battled out a 4-3 match. SideSteps rattled off the first game 4-0. Hit and Run edged out the 2nd game 1-0, as Simon Toseland (4 hits and 2 catches) got the better of Jamie Walden (5 hits) as the players went head to head. Hit and Run took the next 2 games 5-0 and 3-0, before SideSteps hit back with a maximum 6-0 game. Hit and Run then sealed the victory with a 2-0 win, thanks to Simon Aird (6 hits) and Dale Moore (6 hits). Stepers finished off the match with another 6-0, James Canavan making the final play by catching the last throw from Hit and Run.

2nd August 2006

Shaun Hits Big

Kettering DodgeBall League postponed the normal league matches for one week, for Hit and Run and Jammy Dodgers, aka SideSteps, to play a best-of-5 challenge series. Both teams played with 2 guest players and Shaun Gray, a Retail Assassins player, was Hit and Run’s man of the series. Shaun was last man standing in 1-0 victories, 1 in the second match and 2 in the third, as Hit and Run powered to a 3-0 series win.

The first match was won by 5-2. The match was 1-1 after both teams racked up 4-0 wins. Hit and Run took the next two 5-0, before Jammy Dodger swept to a 6-0 win to close the match to just one game. Hit and run replied with a resounding 6-0, thanks to 4 hits from Dale Moore (7 hits in the match), and then finished off the match with a 5-0 game.

The second match also finished 5-2 to Hit and Run. They were leading 3-2 in a very closely fought contest when Shaun Gray produced the game of the night. Last man standing against 4 Jammy Dodgers, Shaun (9 hits in the match) went into overdrive, taking out all 4 with his own throws while dodging and diving around the court.

Hit and Run wrapped up the best of 5 series with an emphatic 7-0. Most games were close, and there was some outstanding play from the Dodger’s Rick Fraterrigo (Capt.), 7 hits, and Daniel Cox, 8 hits, who both went head to head with Shaun Gray, 9 hits, as last men on court. Shaun was just too agile on the night, although Rick was hit within just 1 second of tying the 5th game.

26th July 2006 Season One, Week 1. The action starts for real.

Hit and Run start with a Big Hit

The first match was between Hit and Run and Retail Assassins. Hit and Run’s top marksmen were on fire, as they demolished the Assassins 7-0. Simon Aird led the way with 9 hits, supported by Dale Moore with 8 along with Matt Smith and Stuart Toseland who made 7 each.

After a 15 minute recess, for Hit and Run to cool down in the oppressive heat, their second match, this time against SideStepss, got underway. Hit and Run continued where they left off, by winning the first 4 games of the match, to put them in an unassailable lead. The second game was very close and they won it 1-0 thanks to last man standing Simon Toseland. Simon was also their last man in the match’s last 3 games, but he was heavily outnumbered each time and was unable to stay in to the final whistle. Result 4-3 to Hit and Run.

The final match of the night was a much tighter affair. SideSteps and Retail Assassins were fighting it out all the way in a thrilling 4-3 result, that saw the lead change 3 times. The first game was the only one on the night to go the full distance, the Assassins coming out on top 3-1. They were unable to wrap up the win within the 2 minutes, as the Stepers Daniel Cox, 6 hits in the match, showed off his amazing survival skills. Jamie Walden, 5 hits, almost managed to duplicate this feat in the last game of the match but took a shot to the foot with just a few seconds left on the clock. SideSteps put in a strong team performance, led by captain Rick Fraterrigo with 6 hits, to win the match. The Retail Assassins also put in a good team effort with captain Paul Marriott leading the way with 7 hits and 1 catch, supported by Shaun Gray with 5 hits and Nick Pinnock with 4 hits and 2 catches, both from strongly driven throws.
