Match Rules:
1. The Players
Mixed sex or single sex teams, down to personal preference. 6 players make a team; a squad of 10 is recommended.
2. The Court & Equipment
Senior Courts have dimensions of 24ft x 42ft with a 2ft dead zone at the centre across the width. No player is allowed to step in the dead zone.
Courts shall be clearly marked with Blue Lines.
Variations in court size are allowed, subject to the physical dimensions available at the facility in use.
Wherever possible, courts shall use walls as the back lines of the court, at both ends.
The Ball
The ball shall be 8-10” diameter, 2-3 pound pressure.
Uniforms
Each Team shall wear the same colour shirts. In the event of 2 teams wearing the same colour, alternative tops shall be provided by KDL.
It is recommended that shoes appropriate for indoor court play are worn.
No Jewellery of any kind is allowed on the court.
No spectacles are permitted on the court unless the player can prove they are specialist sports glasses.
3. Match Play
Each game has a time of 2 minutes.
Start of Play
Each team takes opposite courts prior to the start of the game. The designated home team chooses which side of the court to begin play on.
If at the start of a match one team fails to field a team of 6, that team shall forfeit the game and not the match. If a team fails to field 6 players, they may still be allowed to play the game, at the discretion of the referee and by agreement of the opponents.
A team can field up to 2 guest players in any game.
After the official has determined that both teams are present and ready he places the dodgeballs in the dead zone on the court. The official will start the game.
Only 3 players from each team will run to collect the balls and the game begins.
No player can step into the dead zone during the match; if they do they are called out.
Once possession is attained the player has 5 seconds to pass the ball to the back line before an attempt can be made.
Play
A match consists of 7 games.
Generally play is continuous as each team makes attempts at throwing the other team’s players out until all players on one team are out or time expires.
The ball can be passed between teammates a maximum of 3 times before the ball must be released.
No player may leave the boundaries of the court to avoid being struck by an attempt (players may only leave the court to collect ‘dead’ balls, players must return to the court before an attempt can be made). If a player does leave the boundaries of the court the official will call them out.
During play, stepping on the boundary line is considered leaving the court.
No player can step into the dead zone during play. If so the player is called out and must retire to the player return area in order put out.
A player is called out when:
Struck by an attempt before the ball strikes the ground.
A player from the opposing team catches their attempt cleanly.
A player violates any rule i.e. taunting
A player may use the ball to block an attempt by their opponents. However, the block must be ball-to-ball only. If the driven ball hits the defending player’s hand or fingers when the block is attempted, the player will be called out. If the ball held by the defending player is dropped when the block is made, the defending player will be called out. A driven ball that is deflected by a block becomes inactive and any hits or catches that happen after the block do not count.
The Referees/Officials decision is final. Disputing with the official may lead to the game being forfeited or players being banned from game/match.
Play is continuous, there is no time allowed between games.
Time Outs
A team may call to the referee to ask for a ‘time out’, when one of their players is injured. Only the referee can call the time out, for injury or for any other reason.
After a time out has been called, teams retain any balls in their possession for the restart. Dead balls will be placed into the Dead Zone. When the referee signals the restart, players must be at the back line of the court.
Possession Changes
Possession changes after an attempt is retrieved.
Each team has 5 seconds to make an attempt on the other team. If a player holds the ball longer than is permitted the official calls for the ball and bounces it into the opposite court and play continues.
If a player voluntarily releases the ball, to make a catch or for any other reason, the ball is still in that team’s possession, the 5 seconds rule still applies, and an attempt must be made within 5 seconds of the team’s initial possession.
When a dead ball is declared for reasons of team interference, or any other reason, the possession is taken by the official from the offending team and given to the other team by bouncing the ball into their court.
Ending a game
A game is ended when:
All players on one team are out.
Time expires
A forfeit occurs
The winner of the game is the team with the most players left at the end. Players left on court shall earn their team a game point.
If both teams have the same number of players left then the game will be deemed a tie.
In Tournament knockout play a tied game will result in 1 (one) minute of overtime. All 6 players will play overtime from each team. The team that has a player called out first will lose the game.
Ending a match
A match is ended when:
One team wins the majority of games within the match.
One team voluntarily or involuntarily forfeits the match.
The winner of the match is the team that wins the majority of games in a match. If one or more games are tied, it is possible for the match to be drawn.
Illegal attempts
Any deliberate attempt that strikes an opponent above the shoulders is an illegal attempt.
Kicking the ball constitutes an illegal attempt.
Punching the ball constitues an illegal attempt.
Leaving the court when Put Out
Players shall immediately leave the playing area when put out or called out. Failure to leave the court immediately can result in forfeit of the game by the offending team.
Players must sit out in the order that they are called out and must re enter the game in the order called out i.e. first out first in. Players must remain in the player return area. Failure to do so may result in the game being forfeited by the offending team.
Injuries
Play and time is suspended when a player is injured. The player must leave the court and cannot return till the following game. A substitute can be used.
Any player with a blood injury must leave the court immediately and dress the injury. Players must change uniform with blood on it – if no uniform is available any safe clothing can be used. If blood becomes present again the player must be substituted.
Substitutions
Substitutes must meet the requirements of the game being played.
A substitute is allowed to enter only once per game.
Substitutions may only be made during a stop in play with the recognition of the official.
Returnees
Players are allowed to return to the game from the ‘Player Return Area’ when their teammate catches a valid attempt from an opponent. The official will call the player back in. The player that is allowed to return is the player that has been put out the longest time during that game. First out is first in.
Alcohol: The consumption of Alcohol is completely forbidden during the tournament hours. No player can play whilst under the influence of alcohol; if they do they will be immediately expelled from the tournament.
4. The Definitions
Attempt: the act of a team with possession of the ball trying to put out a member of the other team by throwing the ball at them. A player’s clothing is considered to be part of the body and therefore a valid part of the targeted player. After a successful attempt, the ball becomes ‘dead’ and any resulting hits or catches, off the body of the struck player, will not count.
Block: the act of a player that prevents an attempt from striking them, by using a ball in their possession to deflect the driven ball. The blocked ball becomes ‘dead’ at the moment of contact.
Catch: the act of a player catching an attempt by the other team prior to the ball striking the ground or any other object not natural to the playing area. A player (who is out, after being struck by a ball) may return to the game after a valid catch by his teammate. Players return in the order they are struck out, First out First in (FOFI)
Dead ball: declaration by the official that an attempt has been nullified. A ball striking an official is a dead ball; a kicked ball is a dead ball. An attempt made before the official has started the game is also a dead ball. A ball thrown by a player who is out is a dead ball. The official shall make a verbal call declaring the ball dead. The possession of the ball will change to the opposite team if a dead ball is called. The official shall restart the game by bouncing the ball towards the team who have gained possession.
Dead zone: The area at the centre of the court separating the two plating areas. Players stepping into the dead zone are out as if they have been struck by an attempt.
Driven Ball: a ball that the official deems has been delivered with force and intention. A driven ball may not be delivered intentionally to the head of any player.
Five seconds: a call by the official that one team has had possession of the ball for 5 seconds prior to making an attempt. A player may pass the ball to another teammate but an attempt must be made, by the team, within five seconds of receiving the ball inside the playing area.
Forfeit: a match forfeit occurs when a team fails to show up on time to play or fails to field the required number of players
Head Shot: a ball that strikes the head of a player, when the player is in an upright position with the head at its natural standing height.
Lines: the lines showing the boundaries of the pitch. The actual line is out of bounds.
Official: responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the game. All judgement calls of the official are final.
Player Return Area: the area on one side of the court where players, in the current game, retire when ‘out’ by an attempt. Players must sit in the order they where out until the game is over.
Returnees: allowing the return of players put out when a member of the same team catches an attempt of the other team before the attempt has struck the ground, wall or official.
Taunting: verbally attacking the opposition in an unsportsmanlike manner as determined by the official. Taunting is illegal; teams charged with taunting may forfeit the current game.
Team Interference: the act of a player, not on the court (i.e. a sustitute or a player who is out), who reaches onto the playing area to influence the direction of a ball that is in play.
Time Out: the suspension of play, by the Referee.
Throw: another term for attempt.
